First-week Survival Plan after Emigrating from South Africa

While emigrating became more manageable over the years, managing the stress associated with it has not. Immediately after arrival in your new home country, you may be faced with a whirlpool of complexities. You can make it easier on yourself by working out a survival plan for the first few days after arrival. We share some tips on how to do that based on our experience in helping families relocate to Australia and the UK from South Africa.

  1. Give yourself enough time to recover from jet lag and travel exhaustion.
  2. Write down your phone number and address; it may take you a while to remember it.
  3. Identify your priorities to prevent becoming overwhelmed by processes such as opening new bank accounts, registering for tax, getting acquainted with your new job requirements, and more.
  4. Reach out to connections that may be helpful. Professional networks for people in your industry or ex-pat groups are good places to start.
  5. A trip to the visitor centre will help you find out about tourist attractions, grocery stores, local holidays and other important information.
